Recommendations for Instructors

These recommendations have been created for delivery of the pair programming guidelines. It is hoped that these will be used by other educators wishing to apply pair programming practices in their teaching.

A handy ‘cheat-sheet’ displaying all the guidelines can be used for reference by students, and can be downloaded here.

        1. Deliver the guidelines following an introduction to pair programming and after students have had a first experience of pair programming to gain some familiarity with the process.
        2. Discuss the guidelines and their potential benefits with students rather than simply deliver them as ‘procedures’.
        3. Illustrate the various communication states and the patterns, to reinforce the ease of their applicability.  A video has been produced to explain the guidelines, using examples from the videos. Each segment of video is also captioned, to better illustrate the various communication states that the pair experiences. A copy of this video is freely available, and can be seen below.
